Carolyn Culmer

Carolyn Culmer departed this life on Saturday August 25, 2018 at home surrounded by family and friends in Newark DE. She was born June 18, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Ethel English. She was educated in the Philadelphia School system and graduated from William Penn High School.

In 1972, she met Samuel Culmer and from that union were born Raina and Jennifer. Carol as she was affectionately called by everyone worked many jobs throughout the years but if asked her favorite was being a barmaid. Carol worked at ConAgra Brands until 2000 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer and went out on disability.

During this time, she focused more on her family and getting her health back in order. Carol loved being a mother to Raina and Jennifer and her other children from her husband’s previous unions and whomever else would benefit from her motherly advice. Above anything else, she adored being a grandmother to her grandchildren. She fought a valiant fight against five bouts of cancer.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Samuel Culmer, mother Ethel English, and her sister Willa Lee English.

Carol will truly be missed and leaves to cherish very fond memories of her: Eight children, four daughters Charlette Butler of Newark, NJ, (Jerry Malik) Lauren Van Dyke of East Norriton, PA, Raina Culmer of Newark, DE and Jennifer Simmons, (Conrad Simmons) of Upper Marlboro, MD. Four sons Charles Culmer, (Angelique Culmer) of Staten Island, NY, Jason Culmer of Philadelphia, PA, Jerome Davis of Philadelphia, PA and Samuel Johnson of Bunker Hill, WV. Twenty grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Asia, Antoine, Antoinette, Aliyah, Aniqua, Jerry, Sean, Isaiah, Jaden, Taliah, Tyrin, Deandre, Dominique, Diona, Samuel III, Jaycion, Conrad Jr., and Jaycee. Three sisters Nora Mack of Willingboro, NJ, Ruth Milnor of Willingboro, NJ, and Renee Hanton (William Hanton) of Philadelphia, PA. One brother Butch Hawkins (Judy Hawkins) of Philadelphia, PA. One sister in law, Vannie Culmer of Philadelphia, PA. Two brothers in law George Culmer of Lansdowne, PA (Gifty Culmer), Charles Culmer of Lehigh Valley, PA (Robin Culmer). One godson Daniel Mack, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
