Eugene was born on December 23rd, 1956 to the late John Copeland and Pauline Upchurch. He was the first child to have a kidney transplant at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. He was only 5 years old then and was not expected to have a long life. Beanie, as he was so lovingly known to everyone, was educated in the Philadelphia School System and the Job Corp.
When growing up, Beanie always dreamed of being a “Cop” or a “Racecar Driver”. However, his life moved in a different direction from either of those occupations. For a short time, Beanie worked in Harrisburg in the House of Representatives Office. Although he enjoyed this position, he moved on to a position with the City of Philadelphia, in the Voter Registration Office where he worked for many years.
On June 30, 1980, Beanie had his son, Eugene Jr. with Denise Whitby. On December 23, 2000, Beanie married Theresa Reeves and began his union with Theresa’s daughter Nikkia.
For as long as he could remember, Beanie had a love for rebuilding cars. His favorite car was a white and red 1965 Chevy Impala. Red was his favorite color, and he also loved watching old movies. But if you knew Beanie, you knew he loved to party!
Eugene is proceeded in death by his parents, John and Pauline, his siblings Geraldine Henderson, Leon Upchurch and Patrick Upchurch. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Theresa: his children, Eugene Upchurch Jr. and Nikkia Plunkett; his brother, William; his five sisters, Jacqueline, Patricia, Joan, Paulette, and Elizabeth; his grandchildren Jayana, Anayah, Jannah, Janiah, and Dylan; his mother in-law, Elease Bradley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
