Harriet Mims

October 24, 1929 — August 24, 2024

Harriet W. Mims was born October 24th, 1929 in Horatio, South Carolina from the union of Jack Reed and Janie Reed, the 7th of 11 children. She attended High Hill High school where she participated in various sports as she considered herself somewhat of a "Tomboy".

She followed her two older sisters to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to embark on life in the big city where she established her permanent residence for over 70 years. During that time she met and married George B. Mims in 1956 and from this union they reared their daughters, Cressandra A. Brown and Audrey C. Mims.

Harriet had the ambition of becoming an entrepreneur and In the early 50s she purchased a small candy store on the corner of Dauphin and Cleveland street in North Philly. This was the first of several businesses that Harriet owned including Mims Dry Cleaners and Alterations shop and C&C Dry cleaners she owned with her husband. She became a staple in her community and where the dry cleaners was considered a landmark in the community.

Harriet was a loyal and active member of Jones Tabernacle, AME Church for over 60 years. She spearheaded many fund raisers and served on the Deaconess Board as a Lay person. In her spare time, Harriet wrote poems and Christian plays, "There's a Bright Side Somewhere" and "Poor Man Family Dinner", that were performed at her church home.

Harriet was a loving sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to anyone loved her family. She loved her family and never missed a birthday, special occasion, or holiday.
