Herbert Young Sr.

Herbert G. Young Sr. was born October 5, 1935 to the late Robert and Viola Young in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. He transitioned from this life on March 1, 2019. He was 83 years old.

Herbert received his early education in the Hamilton County School District. After working a number of
odd jobs, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. While proudly serving in the Air Force, Herbert
successful obtained his high school diploma and retired after 21 years of service. He returned to Dover,
Delaware and married Shirley Young, to whom he was married for 36 years.

Herbert was a great father and friend to those who had the opportunity to meet him and those who
took advantage of the opportunity to get to know him. He was both funny and no nonsense. He
believed in the payoff of hard work, yet he also took time to enjoy simple things life had to offer. He
enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes. He loved to grill and passed that love on to his son Charles. He
loved his Motown music just as much as he loved car shows and classic cars. His love for old cars was so
great that he could tell the make and model of a car just by looking at it. He appreciated a well-kept
yard and enjoyed maintaining his own yard until he was physically unable to do so. There were several
things you could guarantee he would do regularly – take his 2:00 pm nap, watch the evening news and
his forensics television shows, and be at the early worship service on Sunday. Herbert was a member of
Power In Praise Ministries, Inc. where he and his wife faithfully served since 2012. Herbert loved
spending time with his family and extended Power In Praise family, and they equally loved him and the
time spent with him learning of his life experiences and receiving of his wisdom. He will truly be missed
by many.

He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Young; his mother Viola Young; his brothers, Robert Young
Jr. and William Young; his sister, Helen Young; and his son Carlos.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Young of Felton, Delaware; three sons: Boonsiam “Bruce” Young of
Felton, Delaware, Charles G. Price of Felton, Delaware, and Herbert G. Young, Jr. (Tiny) of Chattanooga,
Tennessee; four daughters: Mioka Young of New Castle County, Delaware, Sabrina Christy (Thomas) of
Townsend, Delaware; Teresa Couch (Marvin) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Velba Gutrick (David) of
Chester, Virginia; 20 grandchildren; one sister: Mavis Dallas of Chattanooga, Tennessee; two daughters
by love: Darlisa Farlow of Dover, Delaware and Beatrice Ryder of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a son and
daughter by love: Michael and LaTear Rhone and their three children; a grandson by love: Brandyn
Nichols; and a host of nieces, nephews; cousins, friends, and loved ones.
