Joseph J. Akers Jr. was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 19, 1925, to the late Eula Brown and the late Joseph J. Akers Sr. He departed this earthly life on September 24, 2018. Joseph was affectionately known as "Joe" by his family and friends. He attended the Philadelphia Public School System. Upon completion of high school, Joe joined the US Army. Joe was proud to be in the Army where he served his country for over 20+ years. Joe's military rank when he retired from the Army was a Master Sergeant. After serving for 20+ years, he retired earning three purple hearts. After his retirement , Joe began a career with the City of Philadelphia where he was employed at the Pennsylvania Hospital as a member of the environmental services department. Joe loved his job and his co-workers.
Joe was a faithful member of the Men of 644 Engineer Battalion for more than 50 years, where he served as the President for many years. While a member of 644, Joe was instrumental in sending hundreds of students to college to continue their higher education. Joe was also a Boy Scout Troop Leader for many years, serving his community was a life long desire and he fulfilled his duties until his health began to decline.
In 1992, Joe joined First African Presbyterian Church, there he served faithfully and was ordained Deacon. Joe was also a member of the choir, he remained committed to the church throughout his illness.
One of Joe's many loves was to fish, he would take his sons, boys from the neighborhood and his boy scout troop fishing as often as he could. Of his many accomplishments, Joe was the most proudest of his children and his family. He was a supportive and dedicated father and loving companion to Inez. Joe loved spending time with his family and friends most of all.
Joe leaves to mourn an cherish his memory: His loving and faithful life companion of 26 years Inez Gilchrist, his daughters JoAnn Mobley and Victoria Akers, his sons, Calvin Akers, Theophaulis Akers, Joseph J. Akers III, Robert Akers, Michael Akers and David Akers; daughters-in law, Michelle Akers, Brenda Akers, Robin Akers, Karen Akers and Kena Akers; Three stepchildren:Homer Smith, Krystal Gilchrist, Eva Gordon and Scooby, 32 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
