Mary Ella Young (Scott) was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina on July 27th, 1937 to the late William Otis and Beulah Elizabeth Young. She was the eldest of two children. Mary quietly departed this life on Friday, September 6th, 2019, she was 82 years old.
Mary was educated in the North Carolina school system in Forsyth County. Mary’s travels took her to Newark, New Jersey, Hartford, Connecticut, Manhattan, New York and later Philadelphia, Pa, where she settled and called home. While in Philadelphia, Mary furthered her education to become a certified Dietician. She was employed at the Osteopathic Hospital, which was located on City Avenue until she retired in 1998. Mary loved her job and was well loved by many. He co-workers often talked about her big smile and friendly disposition. Although she loved making people feel special, she also was known for “telling it like it was”.
Her home on Moss Street became one where many young people gathered, Moss Street neighbors was a community of friends and family; there she was affectionately known as “Mom Mary”.
Mary loved entertaining, cooking, watching sports, and listening to her music every morning. If you walked past her door you could hear her singing, and she could sing too. Her favorite artists were the late Aretha Franklin and BB King.
While living in Philadelphia, she became a member of National Temple P.C.O.G. at 4100 W. Girard Avenue, under the leadership of the late Pastor Grace L. Crosby.
Mary relocated back to Winston Salem, NC after she retired to care for her aging mother. After the passing of her beloved mother, she became ill and was no longer able to care for herself so she was transported back to Philadelphia where she remained under the care of her daughters.
Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Odell Otis Young and her son Hans Govan Scott.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving children; Patricia Ann Young, Rodriquez Scott, Linda Ann Jones (James), Harry Lee Scott, Albert James Scott, Ferbia Michelle Scott, and Tyrone William Scott. Her beloved grandchildren; Terrance Lamont Young, Arron Yancey, Rod Scott Jr., Raymond Scott, Lamar Rodriquez Jones (Yajaira), Ayeesha Frazier (Michael), Latasha Hairston (Jamal), Joy Marie Brown, Alena Nicole Jennings, Takia Rashida Young, and Tyree Devaughn Scott; she also invited Christine Moore into her heart as a special granddaughter, 21 great-grandchildren to include Jaidah and Jullian Virgilio-Silver, special friends; Miriam Green of New York, NY, Mary Green of Philadelphia, Pa, and her former husband, Morris E. Scott Jr., of Chicago, Illinois and a host of other relatives and friends.
