"And also that every man should drink and enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God" Ecclesiastes 3:13
Henry Robert Patillo, Jr. affectionately know as "Stump" was born March 7, 1927 to the late Robert Henry Patillo, Sr. and Grace Vaughn Patillo in Norlina, North Carolina. He was baptized at an early age at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Norlina.
He received his formal education through the Warren County School district graduating from Warren County Training School. In 1948, Robert decided to leave Norlina for Philadelphia, Pa to live with his
uncle John T. and join other family members who had migrated north. It was here in Philadelphia that he met and married the love of his life the former Laura Jefferson. This marriage was blessed with three great sons - Melville, Conrad, and Douglas. Melville and Conrad would both precede him in death.
Robert served in the United States Army and received an Honorable Discharge for his service as a combat veteran in the Korean War. After completing his tour of duty, Robert was employed by the Budd Company - Red Lion Division where he retired after 35 years of service. Following his retirement, he was encouraged to try his skill in landscaping, a craft at which he did very well.
During the 1950's Robert joined the Second Antioch Baptist Church where most of his family were members. When Reverend Joe E. Nock became pastor of Second Antioch, he became familiar with three gentlemen always sitting together in the upper level of the church - they were Bros. Willie Seward, James Henderson, and Robert Patillo, Jr. - all relatives. Pastor Nock soon named them "The Three Amigos".
The Patillo family is one of the oldest families on the block of Estaugh Street in Nicetown. During his years of illness, Robert would sit on his porch and serve as the official "Greeter" in the neighborhood. He was one who possessed a pleasant personality, had friendly ways to compliment that Patillo smile. Along with his passion for baseball, Robert was also a member a bowling league. He also used to enjoy fulfilling his obligation to serve on Jury Duty.
Not one to complain about his illness, Robert constantly stayed in prayer. Even until his last hour he could be found helping his wife.
Robert was preceded in death by two his sons - Melville and Conrad, as well as three siblings - Eliza, Priscilla, and Sam. Cherishing his memories are his loving wife and companion Laura; his son Douglas and daughter in law Jacqueline; three sisters Grace Harrison, Bernice McSweed, and Shirley Lyons; two brothers, John (Helen) Patillo and Charley (Helen); four grandchildren, Markia Carolina (Deotis), Fallyn, Abrill, Tharon; Nine great-grand children; a special friend Francis Morton as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
