Thomas Thompson Jr., 83, of Philadelphia, PA passed away on September
20, 2018 in his home. Many who loved him often called him Tommy, June
Bug, Batman, T.T. or Harpo.
Thomas was born in Tillman, SC to Inez and Thomas Thompson Sr. on
November 16, 1934. He began his education in the Philadelphia School
District and completed his studies in the US Armed Forces. Tommy was a
proud veteran of the Korean War, serving both in the US Army and US
Navy, earning a Bronze Star Medal. He worked as an electrician for Labor
Union 57 for over 30 years. Tommy was involved in the International Free
and Accepted Modern Masons & OES Hiram 11 Lodge and the Youth Aid
Panel for the 39 th District. He received multiple awards for the years spent
with the Youth Aid Panel.
Tommy could be counted on to know what was going on in the community
and often offered resources he was aware of. Every day he would take his
daily walk before the sun came up because he hated to sit still. It was not
odd for him tell you where the local community picnic was, find a free
turkey around the holidays, fix something in your home, or refer a young
person to the Youth Aid Panel for help and support.
Tommy married Kym Renee Griffin on October 31, 2004 in Philadelphia,
PA. They loved to travel; it was one of his favorite pastime. Not only did he
take trips with his wife but also with his grandchildren and the Masons.
You could always count on June Bug to jokingly say, “gimme five dollars”
and our response was always “no!” The entire time, he was slipping the
children money. The bond that he had with the younger generation will
always be fondly cherished and remembered.
Thomas was preceded in death by his father Thomas Thompson Sr.; mother
Inez; brothers John, Bobby, Mark, Freddie and Jake; sisters, Lucy and
Frances; children Gail, Anthony and Terry.
Thomas leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Kym; children Nathaniel
“Butch” (Sharon), Cynthia, Gwendolyn (Jerome), Kim (Milton) Sheri,
Calvin (Ebony), and Vernel II; two brothers, Nathaniel (Agusta) and Harold
(Jacqueline); in-laws Rev. Vernel J. McDonald, Lynda, Venneth (Deborah)
and Karen; former wife Kay Raynor; a host of grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
Lovingly Submitted,
The Family.
