Walter Avery

April 6, 1935 — November 27, 2024

Walter Avery Sr, was born in Philadelphia PA, on April 06, 1935, to his late parents, Gardner Blackwell and Fannie Finis Avery. He was raised from childhood to adulthood by Fannie and Miles Avery. Walter was educated in the Philadelphia School system, and began employment with the City of Philadelphia. He retired in 1990, after thirty-five years of City Government service, and rising to the rank of Superintendent.

At an early age Walter met and married his childhood sweetheart, Roberta Lyons, where they were inseparable for forty-two years, until her death in 1993. From their union were born four sons: Walter Jr, Miles, Derrick, and Brian; three daughters: Linda, Dee, and Celeste.

Walter was a very talented self taught carpenter, plumber, and electrician. Up into his senior years he would fix anything that needed fixing in his home. He remodeled his basement by himself. He was an avid coin collector, historian, pinochle player, and musician. He played guitar in a band for many years.

Lastly, but more importantly than any of Walter's accomplishments, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ, as his personal, Lord and Savior.

Walter was preceded in death, by his wife, Roberta, siblings John, Mattie, Alberta, Miles Jr, Herman, Nathan, and Betty. Grandsons: Walter III, and great grandsons: Zahir, Ahmad, and Elijah.
